The Difference Between Secure and Anxious Attachment
May 2026 · 8 min read
Anxious attachment looks like rereading a text twelve times. Refreshing the screen. Wondering what you did wrong when nothing is actually wrong. It's the constant low hum of: am I about to lose this?
Secure attachment looks different. It also notices the delayed reply — but it doesn't catastrophize. It can hold the discomfort of not knowing without spiraling into a story.
The difference isn't intelligence, love, or commitment. It's regulation. Secure people have built — through experience, repair, or intentional practice — the ability to stay with their own feelings without outsourcing them to someone else.
The good news: secure attachment is learnable. Your nervous system can be retrained. It takes time, honesty, and a willingness to feel things you've spent your whole life avoiding. But it is possible.
